Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.
Trial details and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.
Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.
Historical background and group hierarchy
The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.
Previous convictions and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.
The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
