Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of materials that included no new information.
